SUMMARY:Beyond the Black Box: Six Degrees of Separation - Independence\, Impartiality\, and Duty of Disclosure
DESCRIPTION:Event Details\nBeyond the Black Box: Six Degrees of Separation – Independence\, Impartiality\, and Duty of Disclosure | 12 October 2023\nThere have been significant cases recently which considered the issues of bias and conflicts of interest in international arbitration. The need to ensure that justice is not only done but is also seen to be done in arbitration to resolve their disputes. What should an arbitrator disclose and what should the arbitrator do if being challenged by one of the parties. Are we being too sensitive or being too practical? \nFor our second session\, join our facilitators\, Delphine Ho and Jern-Fei Ng KC as they lead the discussion and explore the various types of conflicts of interest\, and instances where a challenge based on conflicts crosses the line and becomes and abusive one. \nThe discussion\, subject to the Chatham House Rules\, will address\, amongst others: \n\nHow much uniformity exists among the various sets of institutional rules and guidelines\nWhat are the main types of conflict of interest that pose a challenge in arbitration proceedings\nHow much independence and impartiality do users seek\nWhat are users expecting\, and to what extent do expectations differ concerning the users’ own arbitrator\, the arbitrator appointed by the opponent\, and the chairperson\nIn what ways can party-appointed arbitrators impact independence and impartiality\nWhen and why should an arbitrator be challenged\nWhether the approach to disclosure and challenges should be revisited\n\nRegistration for the event has closed.  \n\n12 October 2023\n6.00pm – 7.30pm (GMT+8)\nRegistration starts at 5.50pm. Light refreshments will be served.\n\n\nSingapore\nOrganiser: Maxwell Chambers\nFormat: In-person\n\nPlease RSVP by 17 April 2023. We look forward to having you join us! \n \nSpeakers\n\nJERN-FEI NG KC\nJern-Fei Ng KC is an experienced counsel specialising in commercial litigation and arbitration\, with 18 years’ experience appearing before courts and tribunals and sitting as arbitrator in different jurisdictions\, including England\, Hong Kong\, Singapore\, Malaysia\, BVI\, Cayman Islands and Luxembourg. \nHe has acted as counsel in some 350 cases and as arbitrator in some 30 cases pursuant to\, amongst others\, ICC\, HKIAC\, LCIA\, LMAA\, SIAC\, PCA and UNCITRAL Rules. SUMMARY:Beyond the Black Box: Resolving Disputes over the Implementation and Use of AI
DESCRIPTION:Event Details\nBeyond the Black Box: Resolving Disputes over the Implementation and Use of AI | 27 April 2023\nAlibaba founder\, Jack Ma stated recently that “we should use AI to solve problems rather than being controlled by AI.” However\, does the use of AI itself create problems? Should corporate counsel and disputes practitioners be mindful of potential disputes? Or is this paranoia arising from a failure to understand how AI works? \nIn the first of Maxwell Chambers new #BeyondtheBlackBox series\, Benson Lim and Jae Hee Suh will lead the discussion on “Resolving Disputes over the Implementation and Use of AI”. \nThe discussion\, subject to the Chatham House Rules\, will address\, amongst others: \n\nThe use of AI in the legal industry to automate and enhance legal work and the related risks.\nThe potential IP and tech-related disputes arising from the use of AI in the commercial sectors. Examples include chat histories on OpenAI’s ChatGPT being made publicly visible due to a bug.\nThe novel disputes relating to the intersection of government regulations and use of AI. These will be discussed in the broader context of the clash between governments and Big Tech\, the most recent example of which being the US congressional hearing for TikTok’s Singaporean CEO.\nThe relevance of investment protections and possible investment arbitrations for aggrieved tech investors.\n\nSimmons & Wavelength will also conduct a live demonstration of one of their over 30 legal tech products to the invitees – product details to be unveiled at the discussion! \n\n\n 27 April 2023\n \n\n 6.00pm – 7.30pm (GMT+8)\n \n\n Registration starts at 6.00pm.
