SUMMARY:[Second Edition] Maxwell Chambers - Greensquare: Textile Donation Drive #MaxwellGoesGreen initiative
DESCRIPTION:Event Details\n[Second Edition] Let’s Recycle – Give your clothes and household textiles a second life. \nDid you know that an estimated 95% of all clothing\, shoes\, and other fabrics can be recycled in a textile recycling operation?  \nAs part of our #MaxwellGoesGreen initiative\, be part of our second Textile Donation Drive\, in partnership with Greensquare. The collection point will be at Maxwell Chambers Suites from 14 October to 30 November 2024. \nBased on statistics shared by the National Environment Agency\, Singapore generated more than 254\,000 tonnes of textile and leather waste\, but only 2% of such waste was recycled in 2022. In comparism\, 6% of such waste was recycled in 2016 and 4% in 2021. \nLet us do our part to keep textiles in a closed recycling loop to help: \n\n\nconserve natural resources (E.g. it takes 6\,813 litres/1\,800 gallons of water to grow enough cotton to make just one pair of jeans) \n\n\nreduce environmental pollution (as we reduce the waste going to the incineration plant and landfill) \n\n\nfacilitate economical pricing for clothes and foot wear (for use in developing countries) \n\n\nWhat can you donate? \n \n\n\n \n\n\nWILL ACCEPT\nDO NOT PUT\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Textiles that are Clean\, Dry and in usable condition\nItems that are Wet\, Mouldy\, Stained or Torn\n\n\n\nClean clothes\nClean and wearable paired shoes\nClean bedsheets\nClean towels\nClean curtains\, cushion covers\nBelts (usable condition)\nTote Bags (usable condition)\n\nBooks\nToys\, Soft Toys\nStationaries\nPillows\, Bolsters\, Cushions\nUndergarments\nUsed Socks \nBreakable items\n\n\n\n\nPacking tips: Please arrange the clean clothes and textiles into bags and tie them so that there will not be any contamination.\nQ&A from the Lecture:\nQ1: What are the potential challenges in the future for issuing arbitral awards? Are there any changes in environment or technology that may mitigate or worsen these challenges? \nQ2: What aspects of arbitration are ready for AI? \nQ3: What do you think are the key issues that need to be considered when using technology? \nQ4: About diversity\, I notice that the ICC now has an almost 50/50 male/female mix. Is this too fast and too artificial? \nQ5: For operating with ICC arbitration\, since the publishing of the ICC arbitration rules 2021 in the year of 2021\, which part of the arbitration rules 2021 would ICC suggest multi-national companies\, future expert witnesses\, future party representatives and future arbitrators to pay attention to as per ICC’s observation so far? \nQ6: What would ICC like expert witnesses\, party representatives\, and arbitrators to do (and prepare themselves) in order to operate ICC arbitration in line with ICC’s vision?  \nWatch the full recorded session below:\n\nDonation Drive Details \n\n\n 14 October – 30 November 2024\n \n\n 9:00am – 5:30pm\n \n\n\n\n #01-04 Maxwell Chambers Suites (please refer to the map below)\n \n\n \n \nWhat happens next to the collected textiles? \n \nOur Partner\n\nAbout Greensquare\nGreensquare has been providing textile recycling service to households and organisations in Singapore\, and collected over 100 tonnes of textiles in 2022. \nMission\nGreensquare aspires to make a positive impact; our current target is to double the percentage of recycled textiles from 7% to 14% by 2030. SUMMARY:Maxwell Conversations: Managing Public Policy
DESCRIPTION:Event Details\nMaxwell Conversations: Managing Public Policy | 29 August 2024\n \nMaxwell Conversations features leading personalities at the top of the international dispute resolution industry. These events seek to challenge assumptions with a deeper examination of the issues. \nSynposis  \nPublic policy is an important element in determining the arbitrability of a dispute\, and also a ground on which an award may be annulled or refused enforcement. It has often been said that the public policy should be construed narrowly in keeping with the pro-arbitration policy of the New York Convention or the UNCITRAL Model Law. \nHeld as part of Singapore Convention Week\, this session of Maxwell Conversations focused on the crucial role of public policy in international arbitration. The discussion highlighted how public policy influences the arbitrability of disputes and serves as grounds for annulling or refusing the enforcement of an award. While it is commonly understood that public policy should be interpreted narrowly\, aligning with the pro-arbitration stance of the New York Convention and UNCITRAL Model Law\, the event also shed light on less frequently discussed topics. \nThe panel explored the importance of arbitrator independence and seat court review\, which are considered part of the “international public policy” of arbitration. This was contrasted with how courts may enforce annulled awards if they deem the annulment contrary to their own national public policy\, touching on issues like crime\, corruption\, or sovereignty. The discussion raised important questions about whether international and national public policies are opposing forces or if enforcing courts should consider multiple layers of public policy\, including the public policies of the governing law\, the seat of arbitration\, and how to navigate conflicts between these different frameworks. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmkRD4RMCwk \nThe books referenced by Michael at the start of the session are: \n\nThe Public Policy Exception under the New York Convention\, Second Edition by Anton G. Maurer\nICCA’s Guide to the Interpretation of the 1958 New York Convention\, Second Edition\nGuide on the Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards\, New York 1958 by the UNCITRAL Secretariat\n\nAdditional reference materials include: \n\nRe-calibration of curial intervention in public policy challenges against arbitral awards” written by Darius Chan and Elias Ngai of the Singapore Management University in the Journal of International Arbitration\n\nQ&A from the Lecture:\nQ1: What are the potential challenges in the future for issuing arbitral awards? Are there any changes in environment or technology that may mitigate or worsen these challenges? \nQ2: What aspects of arbitration are ready for AI? \nQ3: What do you think are the key issues that need to be considered when using technology? \nQ4: About diversity\, I notice that the ICC now has an almost 50/50 male/female mix.
