Campaign for Greener Arbitrations Announces New Global Steering Committee Leadership for 2026–2028

The Campaign for Greener Arbitrations (CGA) has announced the appointment of new Co-Chairs to its Global Steering Committee for the 2026–2028 term, marking a leadership transition as the organisation continues to advance sustainability within international arbitration.

New Leadership Appointments

Laura Halonen of WAGNER Arbitration, and Andrew Mackenzie of Scottish Arbitration Centre will assume the roles of Co-Chairs, succeeding Christine Falcicchio of Sopra Legal and Cherine Foty of Covington & Burling LLP, who have served in the positions since 2020-2025.

They will be joined by Vice Co-Chairs Olivier André of Freshfields and Karen Tan of Maxwell Chambers.

Contributions of the Outgoing Co-Chairs

Falcicchio and Foty played a central role in guiding the Campaign’s global governance structure, which comprises more than 100 attorney volunteers across regional committees and subject-matter task forces. They were instrumental in the development and publication of the Campaign’s Green Protocols and in driving practical sustainability initiatives across the arbitration community.

Key initiatives overseen during the current term include:

  • Development of the Carbon Impact Calculator
A forthcoming data-driven tool designed to generate reports on carbon emissions associated with arbitrations, enabling parties to estimate, budget for, calculate, and mitigate emissions. The initiative is led by Innovation & Policy Task Force Co-Chairs Richard Acklam of Charles River Associates, and Athanasia Arapogianni Konisti of BRG.

  • Publication of the Institutions Task Force Green Survey Report
A study examining the challenges and barriers arbitration institutions face in adopting sustainable practices, led by Task Force Co-Chairs Kiran Sanghera of HKIAC and Karen Tan of Maxwell Chambers.

  • Drafting of a Model Clause for Company Outside Counsel Retention
Developed to support in-house legal teams in reducing environmental impact linked to dispute management, led by Corporate Task Force Chair Michael McIlwrath.

  • Launch of the Implementation Survey
An ongoing survey gathering insights into how the Green Pledge is applied in real-world arbitration workflows, hearings, and case management. The survey is led by Implementation Task Force Co-Chairs Alastair Livesey of A&O Sherman and Gökçe Uyar of Permanent Court of Arbitration.

  • Thought leadership and programming on sustainability and arbitration
Including panels and publications exploring the intersection of sustainability initiatives with ESG regulation, environmental due diligence, and climate policy developments.

  • Engagement with arbitral institutions on rule revisions
Including presentations to and proposed amendments for major arbitral institution rules to incorporate sustainability considerations, such as submissions to the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR.

  • Coordination of the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations Award for Sustainable Behaviour
Presented annually at the Global Arbitration Review Awards.

Focus for the 2026–2028 Term

In the upcoming term, CGA said it will continue outreach to new and existing Green Pledge signatories to share best practices for more sustainable arbitrations. The incoming leadership team is expected to place emphasis on implementation and practical support for practitioners, drawing on their prior leadership roles within the Campaign.

Laura and Andrew previously served as Co-Chairs of the Campaign’s Europe Committee in the current term, while Olivier previously co-chaired the North America Committee, and Karen co-chaired the Institutions Task Force.
