Hear what our clients are saying about their Virtual and Hybrid Hearing Experience with Maxwell Chambers
Timothy Cooke
PARTNER, REED SMITH LLP
Our experience of holding a virtual hearing from Maxwell Chambers was a very positive one. The hearing required simultaneous attendance from people across three continents and the presentation of witnesses in different languages. The video conferencing facilities operated without difficulty and with very minimal time lag. This was impressive given that at one point we had counsel in England cross examining a witness in Australia with the tribunal and other participants in the hearing room in Singapore.

We finished a 7-day domestic arbitration which was held at Maxwell Chambers. Fortunately, Maxwell Chambers and the official transcribers, were able to set up the video conference link with an official transcription being taken. The evidence taking generally went well. Overall, the video conference link worked well. With a little fine-tuning, it is a very good solution.

Very well actually. All 3 expert witnesses were very cooperative, so much so that it did not seem virtual at times, and it was as though we were all physically in Maxwell Chambers’ Henderson Room. Maxwell Chambers’ technical support was excellent and the dry run before [the] actual day ironed out most technical issues. If the Tribunal wanted to ensure that counsel’s face appears on [the] screen, Maxwell Chamber’s moderator was a request away, and he would then do the necessary pinning.

It went very well. Much better than I anticipated. The hearing proceeded smoothly and efficiently. It was almost as good as a physical hearing. I am now a big supporter of virtual hearings, especially in this pandemic. Would highly recommend this.

We completed our second virtual evidentiary hearing administered under the rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre in as many months today. It was coordinated seamlessly by the team at Maxwell Chambers. Some quick thoughts: the process is smoother than anticipated both times; translation is significantly slower as a result of the distanced evidence-giving and the natural lag in virtual evidence taking; there will always be accusations that a witness is being coached or prompted in real-time so be prepared for such interruptions; having a proper set-up with multiple monitors and table space for bundles helps. In our second arbitration, we utilised a meeting room in Maxwell Chambers for our set-up with the live transcripts by Epiq being projected. I would not recommend doing an evidentiary hearing from home though; pay attention to the various time zones the witnesses, arbitrators, and counsel are in. It makes one think how borderless dispute resolution and advocacy have become.

I have arbitrated at various arbitration centres and in a number of countries and I must say that I find Maxwell Chambers the best arbitration centre at which I have arbitrated. The facilities are excellent, the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and very supportive of arbitrators. I would not hesitate in recommending Maxwell Chambers as a venue to anyone who is looking for a centre to arbitrate.

I have sat as an arbitrator in a number of cases at Maxwell Chambers. I have found the facilities to be excellent. From the moment that one arrives at Maxwell Chambers the staff make every effort to be helpful, and are unfailingly cheerful and welcoming. The facilities in the hearing rooms are very good. The rooms are light and airy and have good acoustics. All in all, I have found Maxwell Chambers to be the equal of any other arbitration facilities at which I have heard cases, and far better than most.

Maxwell Chambers is the home of the ICC Secretariat Singapore as well as many other arbitration centres in Singapore. It is no coincidence that the leading global arbitration centre has chosen to be located at the leading arbitration venue in the world. Having sat as arbitrator in arbitration centres all over the world, I have not come across another arbitration centre that can rival Maxwell Chambers in terms of its excellent state of the art virtual and room facilities as well as staff support services for arbitrators and counsel alike.

Maxwell Chambers has the unique feature of housing an abundance of international bodies and firms associated with arbitration. For those who are arbitration practitioners, the convenience of being next to SIAC and Maxwell’s hearing rooms is obvious. Foreign arbitral institutions also find benefit in being able to interact and collaborate with other arbitration practitioners and institutions in the same building. All these elements lead to a synergy and a collegiality among the occupants of Maxwell Chambers which is difficult to emulate anywhere else in the world.
