Q: What were some of the key considerations or challenges in developing the Rules for a brand-new international mediation competition?
It was exciting to help create a competition that reflects what mediation is truly about: empowering people to solve problems through dialogue. One of the biggest challenges was designing a competition that is truly distinctive and provides real value to students by helping them experience the power of negotiation and mediation in practice. Another important consideration was developing assessment criteria that are fair while recognizing that excellent mediators and negotiators can have very different styles, personalities and approaches.
Q: Was there a particular rule or feature of the Competition that you believe makes the Maxwell Challenge distinctive?
For me, the most distinctive feature is the role of the student mediator. The entire experience is driven by students in every role, creating an authentic learning environment where participants develop not only advocacy skills but also the ability to facilitate dialogue and help others reach meaningful solutions.
Q: What advice would you give participants about approaching the Competition in the spirit of the Rules?
Take full advantage of this opportunity. I believe the Maxwell Challenge will become an important part of the global mediation community, and those who participate will gain a real advantage in understanding how mediation can best serve their clients’ interests. Focus on achieving the best possible outcome—not by competing against others, but by helping the parties find the best solution together.
