Our panellists will offer multidisciplinary perspectives on a wide spectrum of issues, including the latest developments and trends, implications for the administration of justice, and the opportunities and pitfalls associated with this watershed moment.

The SIAC Academy Specialist Arbitration Series seeks to shine the spotlight on the different areas of arbitration disputes, the major stakeholders, contractual relationships, key legal principles and types of claims and defences that are typically brought in that area, as well as the issues and strategic considerations to take note of in each stage of the arbitration for that particular area of dispute.

In the fourth instalment of this series, we focus on Maritime and Shipping Arbitrations.

On the occasion of the Centenary of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, the President of the ICC Court will consider the characteristics of arbitral awards in the early days of the Court, the most common issues which arise during the Court’s scrutiny of awards and how arbitral awards may be drafted in the future.

Alibaba founder, Jack Ma stated this week that “we should use AI to solve problems rather than being controlled by AI.” However, does the use of AI itself create problems? Should corporate counsel and disputes practitioners be mindful of potential disputes? Or is this paranoia arising from a failure to understand how AI works?

In the first of Maxwell Chambers new #BeyondtheBlackBox series, Benson Lim and Jae Hee Suh will lead the discussion on “Resolving Disputes over the Implementation and Use of AI”.

The discussion, subject to the Chatham House Rules, will address, amongst others:

• The use of AI in the legal industry to automate and enhance legal work and the related risks.
• The potential IP and tech-related disputes arising from the use of AI in the commercial sectors. Examples include chat histories on OpenAI’s ChatGPT being made publicly visible due to a bug.
• The novel disputes relating to the intersection of government regulations and use of AI. These will be discussed in the broader context of the clash between governments and Big Tech, the most recent example of which being the US congressional hearing for TikTok’s Singaporean CEO.
• The relevance of investment protections and possible investment arbitrations for aggrieved tech investors.
